MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES ANNUAL CITY-WIDE CLEAN-UP DATES AND LOCATIONS
Greenovate Boston to host Arbor Day Events, April 25

BOSTON – April 16 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh is asking Boston residents to help clean-up the city this spring during Boston Shines. Now in its thirteenth year, the City’s annual volunteer Spring clean-up event will take place in different parts of the city across three weekends, bringing together more than 5,000 volunteers, including businesses, community groups, and residents to clean up after this winter’s unprecedented snowfall. During the first Boston Shines weekend on Saturday, April 25th, Greenovate Boston will be hosting Arbor Day specific events, such as tree mulching and plantings around the City.

"The snow mounds have melted, the days are getting longer, and spring has arrived," said Mayor Walsh. "Get outside and enjoy the sunshine, and join your neighbors over the coming weekends to clean up our communities, and make our City shine.”

Volunteer opportunities are focused in four service areas: physical service, university engagement, youth development, and creating opportunities to help unite neighbors and communities. Representatives from the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services are reaching out to neighborhood representatives to ask them for assistance in bringing vibrancy back to parks, sidewalks, school yards, and streets. Brooms, shovels, and other tools will be provided by the City and distributed at one of the hundreds of sites that have been identified for cleaning.

Boston Shines will take place over three weekends from April to May, in different regions of the City:
  • April 24th and 25th: Allston, Brighton, Fenway, Hyde Park, Mission Hill, Roslindale, Roxbury, West Roxbury;
  • May 1st and 2nd: Bay Village, Chinatown, Dorchester, Mattapan, South End
  • May 8th and 9th: Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Downtown, East Boston, Jamaica Plain, North End, South Boston, West End

Individuals, groups, and organizations can register online at: cityofboston.gov/ons/bostonshines or call the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services at 617-635-3485. For more information about Greenovate Boston events visit: http://arborday.greenovateboston.org/
