A message from Incoming Superintendent Dr. Tommy Chang |
Dr. Tommy Chang, who will assume the position of Boston Public Schools (BPS) superintendent in July, today announced details of the district's transition team. The team is comprised of 35 people representing a deep understanding of public education in the City of Boston and bringing a wide variety of perspectives from inside and outside the school district. The team will begin meeting later this month.
"I'm eager to bring this diverse group of committed individuals together as we imagine what the future holds for the Boston Public Schools," said Dr. Chang. "We have an ambitious agenda, and I'm confident this group will help establish a strong foundation as we transition to a new chapter for our schools."
Among the key initiatives the transition team will immediately focus on is embarking on a 'listen and learn' tour that will ultimately help establish a 100-day entry plan to guide the district during the first semester of the 2015-2016 school year and beyond.

"I am very excited to participate in Dr. Chang's transition team. One of the reasons I was interested in Dr. Chang's candidacy is the systematic approach he takes to adult team building as a cornerstone of successful school improvement," said Hardin Coleman, vice chairperson of the Boston School Committee and dean of the Boston University School of Education. "It is clear that Dr. Chang will work very hard to build effective coalitions across the district and help them to focus on improving the quality of education for all of our students."
"I know Dr. Chang is eager to get to know our BPS communities in a deep and meaningful way," said Heshan Berents-Weeramuni, a BPS parent and co-chair of the BPS Citywide Parent Council. "I also look forward to helping parents get to know Dr. Chang more fully through this process.""It's no secret that there are still many challenges facing us, especially when it comes to overcoming achievement and access gaps, but there are also opportunities," said Kim Janey, senior project director at Massachusetts Advocates for Children. "I look forward to working with Dr. Chang and his transition team to address inequities in the system and to help create a path to move us forward."The transition team will meet weekly for eight consecutive weeks beginning April 30. A web page has been created at www.bostonpublicschools.org/transition to track the work of the transition team. An email address has also been established ( transition@bostonpublicschools.org) as another way residents of Boston can provide feedback to the transition team. Dr. Chang officially assumes the position of superintendent of the Boston Public Schools on July 1, 2015, having been appointed by the Boston School Committee in March. Dr. Chang succeeds John McDonough who has served as interim superintendent since the retirement of Dr. Carol Johnson in 2013. Transition team members:
