MAYOR WALSH ANNOUNCES PARKING BAN IN EFFECT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, URGES CAUTION

BOSTON - Monday, February 16, 2015 - Mayor Martin J. Walsh today provided an update on snow removal efforts in Boston, announcing that the snow emergency parking ban will remain in effect until further notice to allow plows to continue to clear Boston streets.  Boston received a total of 16 inches of snow in the most recent snow that ended on Monday, for a total of 7.5 feet since January 23. Boston is closing in on the most snow for a season in recorded history (107 inches).

The City's Emergency Operations Center remains open.

Boston's Public Works Department (PWD) is continuing plowing efforts all day Monday, and will move into a full-scale removal operation at 6 p.m. Monday night.  Drivers are encouraged to stay off the roads after 6 p.m. to allow for efficient snow removal operations. The high winds and snow drifts have forced PWD crews to revisit many streets. PWD crews are working to get to every request submitted through the Mayor's Hotline and Citizens Connect.

Boston is expecting an additional 3 to 4 inches on Tuesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and possible flurries on Wednesday.  Early forecasts show another storm approaching for the weekend.  Arctic temperatures and a bitter wind chill is expected Monday evening into early Tuesday.

"As we continue around the clock snow removal and melting operations in every neighborhood, our biggest concern is the safety of our residents as we approach arctic temperatures and bitter wind chills," said Mayor Walsh. "Please stay close to home, shovel in short bursts, and call 911 for anyone you see without a shelter. As Boston digs out, I ask everyone to continue exercising caution, patience, and cooperation. I have been struck by how Bostonians have pulled together through the storms. They are bringing out the best in our city."

Over 500 people are residing in city-run shelters, and efforts are being made so nobody is on the street during the approaching cold temperatures. Shelter staff is working 24 hour shifts.

City agencies are focused on shoveling and checking roofs today, and the City will be open for business on Tuesday

Boston Public Schools (BPS) has canceled February vacation Acceleration Academies. Would have served about 1500 students at 20 schools. Calls are going out to all impacted families.

Beginning today, PWD is proactively surveying for potholes and damage to our streets, especially in crosswalks. The City of Boston is building a plan to address the potholes resulting from continuous snow operations.

Information on the storm and clean-up will continued to be updated on boston.gov/snow

Additional Safety Tips:

  • With school out this week the Mayor is cautioning against unsafe behavior, including jumping from snow banks or into snow banks from windows.
  • Use caution when shoveling, cover up and take breaks.
  • Snow loads on roofs remain a concern, including commercial buildings. Please check roofs as soon as possible.
  • The Mayor’s Hotline (617-635-4500) is running around the clock and the City’s social media and mobile technology strategy will be in full effect throughout the storm, including the Citizens Connect app for additional questions and concerns.
