MAYOR-ELECT WALSH ANNOUNCES OPEN TOWN MEETING ON POLICY ISSUES SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14

BOSTON – Today, Mayor-elect Marty Walsh announced an all-day open town meeting with issue-specific breakout groups, to supplement his Transition Committee’s Issues Working Groups public hearings. The event will give all Boston residents the opportunity to share their ideas with the leaders of the Transition Committee Issues Working Groups about how they would improve the City of Boston. The ideas generated will be collected and may be integrated into a final presentation that each working group will share with Mayor-Elect Walsh at the end of January 2014.
The event is being facilitated with the assistance of The Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston. The event will be held Saturday, December 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and sessions will be held in Roxbury at:
  • Roxbury Community College, 1234 Columbus Ave
  • Madison Park High School, 75 Malcolm X Blvd.
  • John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, 55 Malcolm X. Blvd.
The day will include a welcome session in the morning, featuring remarks by: Mayor-Elect Walsh; Ed Glaeser, Director of the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston; Roxbury Community College President Valerie Roberson; Madison Park High School Headmaster Diane Ross Gary; and O’Bryant School headmaster Stephen C. Sullivan. The day will also include morning and afternoon breakout sessions, and an afternoon town hall discussion with Mayor-Elect Walsh.
Those interested in attending the breakout sessions must RSVP online at: www.boston14.org/rsvp-town-hall-meeting. Requests for ASL or translation services can be accommodated if requested in advance on this online form.  
Attendees at morning and afternoon proposal sessions can choose from 11 topics of interest which will meet in smaller groups to share their ideas. The morning and afternoon sessions will be facilitated by moderators from across Greater Boston, including:
  • Arts and Culture: Stephen Johnson, Executive Director, Phyllis and Jerome Lyle Rappaport Foundation
  • Basic City Services: Alasdair Roberts, Jerome L. Rappaport Professor of Law and Public Policy, Suffolk University Law School
  • Economic Development: Edward Glaeser, Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics, Harvard University, and Director, A. Alfred Taubman Center for State and Local Government; Director, Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston, Harvard Kennedy School of Government
  • Education: Bridget Terry Long, Xander Professor of Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education
  • Energy, Environment and Open Space: Jerold Kayden, Frank Backus Williams Professor of Urban Planning and Design, Harvard Graduate School of Design
  • Housing: Richard Peiser, Michael D. Spear Professor of Real Estate Development, Harvard Graduate School of Design
  • Human Services: Tiziana Dearing, Associate Professor of Macro Practice; Co-Chair, Macro Practice, Boston College Graduate School of Social Work
