Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the study of ancient Chinese characters. It will explain Chinese characters in terms of culture; seek to understand the relationship between Chinese characters and Han (Chinese) society and life, such as the relationship between Chinese characters and traditional ways of thinking. Students will learn to analyze the cultural meaning hidden deep within Chinese characters, and use this knowledge in the actual understanding of Chinese characters. Students will attain a basic grasp of ancient Chinese characters, vocabulary and phonology. This course will help students understand the rich cultural and meaning within linguistic symbols by studying them as a systematic record of the culture and history of China’s ancient forbearers. The course will allow Chinese language educators and practitioners to gain a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese culture and learn how to share this knowledge with others.

Students will:
1. Understand the origin and development of Chinese characters.
2. Understand the formation of ancient Chinese characters and the cultural information contained therein.
3. Understand material culture, customs, thoughts and beliefs of ancient Chinese people.
4. Learn to view the features of Chinese culture through Chinese characters.

汉字释义与汉语教学
作为对外汉语教师,在长期的教学过程中看到:由于学习汉语必定要涉及到汉字的学习,而对于大多数非汉字文化圈的外国人来说汉字的学习是汉语学习过程中的一个主要难点因为这些学习者的大多数人从小接触的是拼音文字。一般来说拼音文字可根据它所属语言的发音特点,有相对稳定的组合方式,是纯粹的表音文字;而相对于拼音文字,现存最早的自源文字——汉字,它是表意文字,没有固定的字母,就其结构在不同汉字中的组合而言,表音方式也不具有拼音文字那样的规律性。
那么如何更快、更好地识记和辨别众多汉字的音形义?如何准确把握和理解汉字背后的文化内涵?如何能够摆脱单纯的机械记忆而享受汉字带来的无限乐趣?这就需要我们从汉字的特点出发,结合外国学生的知识特点,对汉字教学进行有效改进,发掘出利于对外汉字教学的可循规律,千方百计为这一汉语教学中的最大瓶颈寻找出有效的解决途径。
我们知道汉字的构形与拼音文字最大的区别就是其具有表意性,是一种特殊的音形义统一体,它往往与客观事物有着显著的关联,可以通过音形义三者的相互联系,能够很快使读者获得所表达的含义。而拼音文字却没有这个特点,它与客观事物的联系性不强,或可以说没有直接的关联,读者需要通过语音的识别才能与客观事物挂上钩。
所以,我们提出:作为对外汉语教学工作者,如果不了解解析汉字的意义,或对汉字的结构缺乏足够的认识,就会把汉字视作没有规律的大量的复杂符号的堆砌,特别是在教学中就会出现某些教师所倡导的“死记硬背”,那结果是可以预料的。反之,如果解析汉字的字形,就会让学生容易得出汉字的“形”与其“音义”之间的关系,在学习的时候自然就会轻松很多,并逐步引导学生真正做到举一反三。学生还会意识到汉字的学习不但是件有趣的事,而且可以从中学习到很多中国的历史、文化,甚至他们会认为是有益于智力的。因此,汉字的解析在对外汉字教学中是非常重要的,是每个汉字教学工作者一定要重视的教学环节。
鉴于上述要点,我们根据中国国家汉办研制的《汉语国际教育用音节汉字词汇等级划分》为蓝本,开设一门专门分析汉字教学的系列讲座。目的主要是想使学习汉语的外国人通过教学,用最少的时间和精力先学好这些用处最大、用得最多的常用字(约1000个)和及其相关的常用词,使之基本做到能读懂、听懂书面语和口语的百分之九十,以提高学习汉语汉字的效率,取得事半功倍的效果。我们会探讨、学习、吸收历代先辈们的成果,结合自己理解,让教学工作者尽快掌握和领悟汉字部首及相关之常用汉字的内涵,使得在教学中做到融会贯通。
