BOSTON UNIVERSITY’S OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT NAMES DAVID SALANT AS 2015 INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR

BOSTON UNIVERSITY’S OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT NAMES DAVID SALANT AS 2015 INNOVATOR OF THE YEARDr. Salant’s achievements highlighted at BU’s annual “Tech, Drugs and Rock & Roll” event
Boston, MA – In a ceremony held today, the Office of Technology Development (OTD) honored Boston University Professor of Medicine Dr. David J. Salant, MD with Boston University’s 2015 Innovator of the Year award. The annual award recognizes a BU faculty member whose cutting-edge research and ideas lead to the formation of companies that benefit society at large.
BU Vice President and Associate Provost for Research Gloria Waters presented Dr. Salant with this year’s Innovator of the Year award at “Tech, Drugs and Rock & Roll,” BU’s annual networking event for Boston-area individuals involved in University Technology Transfer.
“Professor Salant is an entrepreneurial scientist whose research has yielded ground-breaking results by identifying PLA2R as the target antigen in human membranous nephropathy,” said Waters.  “His accomplishments in the past year include fifteen peer-reviewed papers published, two patent filings and substantial sponsored research funding.”
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Salant has endeavored to understand the pathogenesis of glomerular diseases by careful and in-depth analysis of experimental models, leading to paradigm-shifting observations. His laboratory’s primary focus is the immune basis of glomerular diseases with particular regard to the humoral mechanisms of glomerular cell injury.
Dr. David Salant is a professor at Boston University School of Medicine, a post he has held since 1979. He currently serves as Chief of Nephrology at Boston Medical Center. He attended medical school at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa and completed his residency at the Johannesburg General Hospital in 1973. Dr. Salant completed his research fellowship in nephrology at Boston University Medical Center in 1978.
“The success of Dr. Salant’s research lays in his continued perseverance and focus on patient unmet needs,” says BU Office of Technology Development Managing Director Vinit Nijhawan. “His invaluable contributions to the field of nephrology and glomerular diseases, and the commercialization of his recent discoveries by Euroimmun for early diagnosis of kidney disease make him the perfect candidate for the Innovator of the Year Award.”
The Boston University Innovator of the Year award highlights translational research at BU by recognizing an entrepreneurial faculty member and the potential for commercialization and/or wider adoption of their inventions. It also encourages faculty to become inspirational role models who can motivate graduate students to pursue industrious careers. Past winners include Marl Crovella of Computer Science, Mark Grinstaff of Biomedical Engineering, Avi Spira of School of Medicine, Jim Collins of Engineering and Ted Moustakas of Engineering.
