On May 9th
Quincycles will host a leisurely community bike ride along a route proposed for
bicycle lanes and “sharrows,” or “shared lane markings,” as part of this year’s
Bay State Bike Week. The ride will take place on Saturday May 9th at
9am and depart Atlantic Middle School, 86 Hollis Ave. It is being co-sponsored
by Mayor Koch’s Bicycle Commission and the Planning Department and supported by
the Community Police Unit of the Quincy Police Department.
The route being
ridden May 9th follows the Quincy Spine, a path prioritized for
bicycle infrastructure in the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Network Plan. The
Plan was adopted by the City Council in January 2015. If implemented, the Spine would provide
bicyclists a safer way to travel from Quincy to Boston, Braintree and
Weymouth. The Bicycle and Pedestrian
Network Plan includes recommendations for improving bike facilities on several other
streets as well, including Adams Street and Billings Road. Organizers of the
May 9th ride hope the event will increase awareness of the growing
number of bicyclists on the road and garner support for implementing the
recommendations laid out in the Plan.
