Steve Barclay 8/5起接掌駐紐約香港經貿辦公室

 New Director for HKETO-NY Appointed

The new Director of HKETO-NY, Mr Steve Barclay will assume his post on August 5, 2014.  He will be responsible for promoting and strengthening the business, trade and cultural ties between Hong Kong and 31 eastern states of the United States.   Prior to this appointment, Mr Barclay was Director of the HKETO in Sydney for four years, until July 2014.  Before then, he was a public sector reform advocate and internal management consultant in the Government's Efficiency Unit for nearly a decade.

Mr Barclay has served in a wide variety of posts within the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, with policy responsibilities including consumer protectionintellectual property, housing, and environmental protection. He has served as a District Officer in Hong Kong and also as Hong Kong's economic and commercial representative in Brussels.  Mr Barclay has twice been responsible for drafting the Chief Executive's Policy Address.

Mr Barclay first joined the Hong Kong Government as an Inspector in the Hong Kong Police in 1979 and was transferred to the civil service in 1982.

Dragon Boats @ New York Stock Exchange

Mr Barclay will make his first public appearance on August 6 at the New York Stock Exchange, as he and I will be ringing the opening bell at the Exchange that morning to celebrate the 24th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York (HKDBF-NY), together with the organizers and sponsors of the Festival.

The HKDBF, which my office initiated in 1991, is a multi-cultural celebration and sporting event, the largest multicultural Festival in New York and the largest festival of its kind in the US.  For 23 successful years, the HKDBF-NY has attracted a diverse, multi-cultural audience of more than 50,000 attendees throughout North America.

The 24th HKDBF-NY will be held on August 9-10.  It keeps up the age old tradition of Dragon Boat Racing in colorful, custom made teak boats, which are virtual works of art gliding on water.  In modern dragon boat racing, which was initiated in Hong Kong, boats are piloted by up to 20 crewmen, including 18 paddlers, a drummer and steers person.  With a record of over 180 well-trained teams participating, involving more than 2,500 participants competing from across the U.S. and Canada, this year's festival is expected to be notable in its scale and fierce competition.

The Festival will be held on the site of the 1964 World's Fair at Meadow Lake, Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York, rain or shine.  Admission is free.  I look forward to seeing you there.  For more information, please visit - http://www.hkdbf-ny.org/

"Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" - Hong Kong Film Retrospective

A visionary Hong Kong director who made his first film some 50 years ago, Patrick Lung Kong had a profound impact on following generations of filmmakers, including John Woo and Tsui Hark. Portraying oft-neglected social realities with unflinching fervor, and with formal inventiveness, he drew on the rich traditions of Cantonese cinema while bringing new social dimensions to genre filmmaking.

In addition to the 14 feature films he wrote and directed between 1966 and 1979, Lung Kong acted in 60 films between 1958 and 2002-a prolific career which began at the Shaw Brothers Studios and carried over into his own filmmaking.  Though scarcely shown outside of Hong Kong today, he endures as one of the most original and uncompromising auteurs Hong Kong has ever produced.

On August 15-24, my office will collaborate with the Museum of the Moving Image (MOMI) to co-present "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow", a retrospective of the films of Director Lung Kong.  This program - consisting of eight features that he directed and one he produced - is a celebration of the life and achievements of Director Lung.  Director Lung himself, together with another renowned Hong Kong Director, Tsui Hark, will be present at the opening ceremony on August 15 and a number of screenings at MOMI.  For more information, please visit: http://www.movingimage.us/films/2014/08/15/detail/yesterday-today-tomorrow-the-cinema-of-patrick-lung-kong/

With the arrival of Mr Barclay, I will return to my original post as Deputy Director of HKETO-NY with effect from August 5.  I look forward to keeping in touch with you and introducing you to Mr Barclay at the aforementioned events.
