Taipei, Taiwan-Based Artist LIAO Chi-Yu Presents New Video Work at 18th Street Arts Center in Conjunction with a Three-Month Residency Supported by the Taiwan Academy

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- 18th Street Arts Center is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Taiwan-based artist LIAO Chi-Yu. Presented in conjunction with a three-month residency supported by the Taiwan Academy, the artist exhibits an installation of recent videos. Liao’s works inhabit a contrived reality that gleans from memories, allegories, and convivial and communal experiences. In Picnic, Liao references childhood remembrances, using stories around food as an anchor for connecting to history and connecting to each other. Centering on the scenario of a picnic as a site for dreaming and dropping back into the past, Liao gives an impression of reality that seems to be rooted in the recollections of a previous time.
In Twinkle Liao presents a tableaux vivant through a series of video portraits of female characters. Each persona is situated at a dining table, offering to serve the viewer from diverse banquets of food and drink. Referencing 17th century Dutch still life painting and Asian animation genres, the artist creates video images that are caught between action and non-action, where narrative is both imminent and suspended.
18th Street Arts Center has partnered with the Taiwan Academy since 1999 - hosting 28 internationally recognized contemporary artists from Taiwan's thriving art scene. 18th Street Arts Center hosts each artist for 2 months in its 30,000 square foot studio complex in Santa Monica. The artists live at the Center while creating new work - often times forming collaborations and artistic dialog with Los Angeles artists.
Liao Chi-Yu received her B.F.A. and her M.F.A. from the Department of New Media Art from the Taipei National University of the Arts. Recent exhibitions include Miss Farewell – LIAO Chi-Yu at VT ARTSALON in Taipei, Twinkle – LIAO Chi-Yu at the Kuandu Museum of Fine Art in Taipei and MimiLucy – Never Give Up – The New World at VT ARTSALON in Taipei.
